How to Treat a Head Cold

Are you experiencing congestion, a cough, and a sinus headache? Have you found your symptoms to be long-lasting? There’s a chance you have a head cold. No one enjoys having a cold; luckily, there are many treatment options that you can take care of at home. Shorten the lifespan of your symptoms by knowing what works and what doesn’t work in treating a head cold.

Treatment that Helps

Fortunately, a standard cold does not typically require a visit to the doctor. Instead of calling up your primary, start treating your head cold at home with the following tips:

Get Plenty of Sleep

It can be challenging to get a good night’s rest when you are too congested to breathe correctly. However, getting enough sleep is crucial to recovery. By propping yourself up in bed, you can help decrease congestion, thus granting a restful night.

Drink a Warm Beverage with Honey

While you could use a warm drink to soothe a sore throat, it also serves to loosen congestion. Adding a spoonful of honey can also help by coating your throat. You can also take honey without the beverage.

Use a Humidifier at Night

Sleeping in a room with a cool-mist humidifier helps in decreasing congestion. If you do not have a humidifier, you can create a similar environment in the bathroom by closing the doors and windows and running the shower as hot as it will go. Sitting in the steamy room for 15 minutes can help ease your cold.

Drink Plenty of Water

While warm drinks are soothing, water is necessary. Don’t forget to get your required water intake when you are sick. Dehydration will only serve to make your cold worse.

Look into OTC Options

Modern medicine provides a wide variety of options for purchase to help your head cold. You can purchase throat lozenges, nasal sprays, decongestants, pain relievers, and more medical products at any drug store. Be sure to read the directions thoroughly when purchasing for children to guarantee the proper dosage and product.

Treatment that Fails to Help

Avoid using over-the-counter medication in young children, particularly children under the age of 2. Many products are not available for older toddlers, as well. These products will not help your child but likely cause a worse problem.

Antibiotics are another treatment that cannot help a head cold. Colds are a virus; antibiotics will do nothing to stop a virus. If you cannot rid yourself of symptoms after one to two weeks, it may be a good idea to reach out to your doctor. You may have more than just a cold.

Headcold Prevention

Preventing a cold is always the best course of action. The best way to avoid a cold is to wash your hands. You should wash your hands for 20 seconds every time you are in the bathroom, before preparing food, and before you eat. Also, be sure to eat well and stay hydrated to prevent a cold.
